THE HOSKERS
Mike and Deanie Hosker are exceptionally talented teachers and riders. (We speak from experience—having ridden with many top notch dressage and jumper instructors). Deanie has ridden hunters, jumpers and dressage horses. Both have done extensive ranch and cattle work. They currently start colts and finish horses at their ranch in Ellensburg. The horses go on to become safe trail mounts, working cow horses, hunters, jumpers, dressage horses or finished bridle horses.
The Hoskers stress groundwork basics and riding safety. They are clear and articulate, and they work together with the group or with individual students as needed. If there is something that you don't understand from one, you can ask the other and get a slightly different explanation that may be easier for you to understand. They take time to explain everythingno matter your skill or riding level. No one ever goes away without things to work on or think about.
In addition, there are only 12-14 students per class so that the breakdown of students to teacher is seven or fewer to one. We work in a round pen, in the arena and/or in the upper pasture. We work on flagging horses, bumping up to the rail, riding in halters, and improving even the smallest parts of our groundwork. The more advanced groups often work on lateral movements, haunches in, lead changes and becoming more precise.
If we seem very high on these two people, it is because we are. We've seen a great many teachers in a great many fields, as well as a great many NH teachers who have hung out their shingles in the last few years. The style, vocabulary, eye and feel of these two teachers is extraordinary. They practice what they preach and you can see the softness, feel, and preciseness in their horses as well as in their other students. Thanks to Mike and Deanie, we've applied everything that we have learned from them to improve our event and dressage horses, our trail horses, and the horses we use on the few poor unsuspecting cows that we can find. They've made riding in other clinics given by other instructors much easier.
We owe the Hoskers a great deal because they have put fun and understanding back into our riding and have helped us better horsemen, no matter what our particular interests are in. In short, we are enjoying our horses like we used to when we were kids. It's a great feeling!
